"You have no excuse for being bored anywhere. You wouldn't be bored if you had something to do."
That's an official rule at my grandma's house: no one is allowed to say that you're bored, ever. Grandma Jeannie is a firm believer in the above mentioned quote: you wouldn't be bored if you had something to do. And while you have a brain in your head, there's plenty to do. You just have to find it, she'd say.
Yesterday was just one of those long days. Just a home day. Just a boring day. School had our noggins all wobbly and
the boys declared themselves "bored out of their brains." That's when I remembered that we wouldn't be bored if we had something to do. We just had to make this day extraordinary. So we went to the moon.
Dad said we could use anything we wanted out of the leftover boxes from Christmas, and boy, did we ever. Scissors and Sharpies and some of Mom's foil and wads of tape later we had some pretty sweet rides, complete with dial panels and control boards and space gear.
Not 5 minutes from launch we were thick into 9 meteor showers. Luckily we had "metal shooters 5,000 tons strong," so we made it safe. A hop, skip, and a jump on Saturn's rings and there we were. Planting our flags into the oxygen-less (hence the Darth Vader breathing noises) planet surface. We flew home and had Chinese food for supper.
Did you ever watch that movie, Ramona and Beezus? That part at school where the kids are defining words and the girl in the tutu defines extraordinary: that's when you take something ordinary and give it a little...extra.
I think that's my new theme phrase. Yesterday was just an ordinary Tuesday, but my two little brothers took me to outer space, because why not? Because every day should be lived with that attitude. Give it extra today. Open that door for somebody. Call that friend. Paint that masterpiece. Go to the moon.
I think adventure isn't so much in the big, but when we choose to see big. To see extraordinary.
